Kansai Airport Guide
Nankai Rapi:t in 34 minutes, JR Haruka express, limousine bus, taxi options, terminal info, and everything for a smooth arrival in Osaka
Kansai International Airport (KIX) is Osaka's main international airport, built on a remarkable artificial island in Osaka Bay. The fastest option is the Nankai Rapi:t — 34 minutes to Namba for ¥1,450 with comfortable reserved seats. The JR Haruka Express reaches Shin-Osaka in 50 minutes for ¥2,380 (discounted to ¥1,800 for foreign tourists) and continues to Kyoto. The Airport Limousine Bus costs ¥1,100-1,600 and takes 50-70 minutes with convenient luggage storage. Taxis cost ¥15,000-20,000.
KIX has two terminals — Terminal 1 for most airlines, Terminal 2 for low-cost carriers (Peach Aviation). Both have ATMs, free Wi-Fi, SIM card vending machines, and tourist information centers. A free shuttle bus connects the terminals in 5-10 minutes.

Terminal Info
Main Terminal
Handles most full-service airlines including ANA, JAL, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and European carriers. Designed by Renzo Piano with a distinctive curved roof. Extensive duty-free shopping, restaurants (including a ramen street on the 3rd floor), currency exchange, ATMs (use 7-Bank for foreign cards), tourist information center, and SIM card vending machines. The JR and Nankai train stations are connected via the Aeroplaza walkway.
Low-Cost Terminal
Handles Peach Aviation (Japan's largest LCC) and some other budget carriers. The terminal is more basic than Terminal 1 but has essential services — ATMs, convenience stores, and basic restaurants. Connected to Terminal 1 by a free shuttle bus (every 5-10 minutes, 24 hours). The shuttle takes about 7 minutes. If connecting to trains, take the shuttle to Terminal 1 first, then walk to the train station. Allow extra time if departing from Terminal 2.
Built on an Artificial Island
Kansai International Airport was built on a man-made island in Osaka Bay — an engineering marvel visible from space. The Sky Gate Bridge connects the island to the mainland. The island location means no noise restrictions, allowing 24-hour operations. Trains cross the bridge in minutes, unaffected by road traffic. The airport never closes, making it convenient for late-night arrivals and early departures. The Aeroplaza hotel (from ¥5,000) is inside the terminal complex.

Pro Tips
Best Value: Nankai Rapi:t
For most visitors staying in the Namba/Dotonbori area, the Nankai Rapi:t is the best option. At ¥1,450 for 34 minutes with reserved seats and luggage space, it offers excellent value. The futuristic retro-styled train is an experience in itself. Buy tickets at the Nankai ticket counter in the arrivals hall or from machines. Departures every 30 minutes. Namba Station connects to the Midosuji Line for all Osaka destinations.
ICOCA & Haruka Discount
Foreign tourists can purchase the ICOCA & Haruka package at the JR ticket office. This bundles an ICOCA card (¥2,000) with a discounted Haruka ticket — ¥1,800 to Osaka (vs ¥2,380 full price) or ¥2,400 to Kyoto. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, the Haruka is free — use it if heading to Shin-Osaka, Tennoji, or continuing to Kyoto. Show your passport at the JR ticket office to access tourist pricing.
Late-Night Arrivals
The last Rapi:t departs around 11:00 PM and the last Haruka around 10:00 PM. For late-night arrivals, the Airport Limousine Bus runs until approximately midnight. After midnight, options are taxis (¥15,000-20,000) or staying at the Aeroplaza hotel (from ¥5,000) inside the airport complex. First trains start around 5:30 AM. KIX operates 24 hours so the terminal stays open overnight — the rest area in Terminal 1 has reclining chairs.
