Plan My Trip

Osaka Kaiyukan is one of the world's largest and most spectacular aquariums — a towering waterfront complex on the edge of Osaka Bay that draws 2.7 million visitors annually with its breathtaking Pacific Ocean tank, home to whale sharks that glide through 5,400 cubic meters of water. Opened in 1990, Kaiyukan is built around the concept of the "Ring of Fire" — the volcanic ring that encircles the Pacific Ocean — with 16 themed exhibit zones representing different regions of the Pacific Rim, from the forests of Japan to the icy waters of Antarctica, the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef to the deep trenches of the open ocean. Visitors descend through the building in a continuous spiral, encountering over 30,000 creatures from 620 species across eight floors. It is a world-class attraction that rivals Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Georgia Aquarium, and one of Osaka's most rewarding half-day experiences.

Kaiyukan sits in the Tempozan Harbor Village area alongside the Tempozan Ferris Wheel, Santa Maria harbor cruise, and Tempozan Marketplace — making it easy to build a full day around the waterfront. For broader trip planning, see our 1-day Osaka itinerary or 3-day itinerary which includes Kaiyukan as a highlight. Families should also check our Universal Studios Japan guide for another major Osaka attraction.

6 Kaiyukan Highlights

The exhibits and experiences that make Kaiyukan one of the world's great aquariums.

Star Attraction

Pacific Ocean Tank (Whale Sharks)

The centerpiece of Kaiyukan and the reason most visitors come: the Pacific Ocean tank is a staggering 5,400 cubic meters of water — 9 meters deep and 34 meters long — home to whale sharks, manta rays, and schools of tuna. Whale sharks are the largest fish on Earth, reaching up to 12 meters in length, and watching them glide silently past the panoramic acrylic panels is genuinely awe-inspiring. The tank is designed so you spiral downward around it across multiple floors, seeing different species and depths at each level. Feeding time (usually 10:30 AM) is the most dramatic moment — the whale sharks rise vertically to gulp krill from the surface. This single tank makes Kaiyukan one of the finest aquariums in the world.

Highlight

Jellyfish Gallery

A mesmerizing, darkened gallery where dozens of jellyfish species float in illuminated cylindrical tanks, their translucent bodies pulsing with bioluminescent color. The lighting shifts slowly through blues, purples, and pinks, creating a meditative atmosphere that contrasts with the scale of the main tanks. Moon jellyfish, Pacific sea nettles, and spotted jellyfish are among the species on display. The gallery is one of the most photographed spaces in the aquarium — the ethereal glow against the dark backdrop produces stunning images even on smartphone cameras.

Highlight

Penguin Area

A dedicated habitat for rockhopper penguins, featuring a climate-controlled environment that mimics the sub-Antarctic Falkland Islands. The penguins are endlessly entertaining — waddling, diving, squabbling, and preening — and the viewing area is designed with both above-water and underwater windows so you can watch them swim with surprising speed and agility below the surface. Feeding times draw the biggest crowds, as the penguins scramble over each other to reach the keeper. Children (and many adults) can spend 20-30 minutes here easily.

Fan Favorite

Otter Habitat

The Asian small-clawed otters are arguably the most charismatic animals in Kaiyukan — playful, curious, and constantly in motion. Their habitat includes a flowing stream, rocks, and hiding spots, and the otters chase each other, juggle pebbles, and occasionally press their paws against the glass to the delight of visitors. The otter exhibit is small but always crowded, especially around feeding times when keepers engage the otters in interactive enrichment activities. Otter merchandise is among the best-selling items in the gift shop.

Immersive

Tunnel Aquarium

A walk-through acrylic tunnel that passes beneath a tank teeming with rays, sharks, and tropical fish — the marine life glides directly overhead, creating the sensation of walking along the ocean floor. The tunnel is relatively short but intensely photogenic, and the shifting patterns of light filtering through the water above make it one of the most atmospheric moments in the aquarium. Arrive early or visit on a weekday to enjoy it without crowds.

Hands-On

Interactive Touch Pool

Located near the end of the exhibit route, the touch pool lets visitors gently handle sharks (small bamboo sharks and cat sharks), rays, and various invertebrates in a shallow, open-top tank supervised by staff. This is a favorite for families — children can feel the rough skin of a shark or the smooth glide of a ray under their fingertips. Hands must be washed before and after, and staff guide visitors on proper handling technique. The experience adds a tactile dimension that elevates Kaiyukan beyond a purely visual exhibit.

Practical Information

Tickets, hours, directions, and everything you need to plan your visit.

Entry Fee

Adults (16+): ¥2,700 | Children (7-15): ¥1,400 | Toddlers (3-6): ¥700 | Under 3: free. The Osaka Amazing Pass (1-day or 2-day) includes free Kaiyukan entry, making it exceptional value if you plan to visit multiple attractions. Combo tickets with the Tempozan Ferris Wheel and Santa Maria cruise are available at the ticket counter for modest savings.

Opening Hours

Standard hours: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM (last entry 7:00 PM). Hours may vary seasonally — extended hours during Golden Week, Obon, and school holidays. Night Aquarium events run on weekends and holidays after 5:00 PM with special mood lighting and music. Check the official website for the current schedule before your visit.

Getting There

Take the Osaka Metro Chuo Line to Osakako Station (exit 1). Kaiyukan is a 5-minute walk from the station — follow the signs through Tempozan Marketplace. From Namba, take the Midosuji Line to Honmachi, transfer to the Chuo Line (about 20 minutes total). From Umeda/Osaka Station, take the Midosuji Line to Honmachi, then Chuo Line (about 25 minutes total).

Osaka Amazing Pass

The Osaka Amazing Pass (1-day: ¥2,800 / 2-day: ¥3,600) covers Kaiyukan entry plus unlimited subway/bus rides and 40+ other attractions. Since Kaiyukan alone costs ¥2,700, the 1-day pass essentially gives you free transport and access to other attractions for just ¥100 more. This is the best value way to visit Kaiyukan.

Best Time to Visit

Weekday afternoons (after 2:00 PM) are the least crowded. Weekends and holidays see long queues, especially during school vacation periods (late July - August, late December - early January, late March - early April). Morning opening time also draws crowds. If visiting on a weekend, arrive after 3:00 PM or attend the Night Aquarium for a calmer experience.

How Long to Spend

Plan 2-3 hours for a thorough visit. The exhibit route is designed as a one-way spiral descent through 16 themed zones, starting on the 8th floor and ending on the ground level. Speed visitors can move through in 90 minutes; families with children should allow 3 hours to enjoy the touch pool, feeding times, and gift shop. Add another 1-2 hours if exploring Tempozan area attractions.

Nearby Attractions

Make a full day of it — the Tempozan Harbor Village area has plenty to explore alongside Kaiyukan.

Tempozan Ferris Wheel

¥800 (included free with Osaka Amazing Pass)

One of the world's largest Ferris wheels at 112.5 meters tall, offering panoramic views of Osaka Bay, the city skyline, and on clear days, Mount Ikoma and Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. A full rotation takes approximately 15 minutes. Four transparent "see-through" gondolas are available for those who want an unobstructed view straight down. The Ferris wheel is particularly beautiful at night when its LED illumination displays weather forecasts in color.

Tempozan Marketplace

Free entry | Meals ¥800-1,500

A shopping and dining complex directly adjacent to Kaiyukan, featuring restaurants, souvenir shops, a food court, and the Naniwa Kuishinbo Yokocho — a retro-themed food street recreating 1960s Osaka with takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and kushikatsu stalls. The marketplace is the natural place for lunch before or after the aquarium. Prices are slightly higher than city-center equivalents but the convenience and atmosphere make it worthwhile.

Santa Maria Harbor Cruise

¥1,600 (daytime cruise included with Osaka Amazing Pass)

A replica of Columbus's flagship Santa Maria that cruises Osaka Bay on a 45-minute loop, passing under the Tempozan Bridge and offering views of the port, the Ferris wheel, and the city skyline. The daytime cruise is pleasant; the twilight cruise (seasonal, departing around sunset) is genuinely beautiful. The ship departs from the pier next to Kaiyukan, making it easy to combine with an aquarium visit.

LEGOLAND Discovery Center

¥2,800 online / ¥3,000 at door

An indoor LEGOLAND attraction in Tempozan Marketplace, designed for families with children aged 3-10. Features include a LEGO-built miniature Osaka, ride attractions, a 4D cinema, building workshops, and a play zone. The center is relatively compact (plan 1.5-2 hours) but engaging for young children. Note: adults cannot enter without a child, except during occasional adults-only evenings.

Tips for Visiting Kaiyukan

Catch the Feeding Times

Feeding times are the most exciting moments at Kaiyukan. The whale shark feeding (usually 10:30 AM) is the highlight — the massive fish rise vertically to the surface to gulp krill, creating a spectacular display. Penguin, otter, and seal feedings happen at scheduled times throughout the day. Check the feeding schedule board near the entrance when you arrive and plan your route accordingly.

Night Aquarium Events

On weekends and select holidays after 5:00 PM, Kaiyukan transforms into the "Night Aquarium" with special blue and purple mood lighting, ambient music, and a more romantic, contemplative atmosphere. The jellyfish gallery is particularly stunning during these events. Night Aquarium is popular with couples and is significantly less crowded than daytime visits. No additional fee — regular admission applies.

Save with Combo Tickets

Combo tickets bundle Kaiyukan with the Tempozan Ferris Wheel, Santa Maria cruise, or LEGOLAND Discovery Center at modest discounts. However, the Osaka Amazing Pass remains the best overall value — it covers Kaiyukan, the Ferris wheel, the Santa Maria cruise, unlimited metro rides, and 40+ other attractions across the city. Purchase the Amazing Pass at any metro station.

Photography Tips

Flash photography is strictly prohibited throughout Kaiyukan — it stresses the animals and reflects off the acrylic panels, ruining the shot anyway. For the best photos: press your lens close to (but not touching) the glass to minimize reflections, increase your ISO for the low-light conditions, and use burst mode to catch moving fish. The jellyfish gallery and the Pacific Ocean tank are the most photogenic spots. Smartphone cameras perform surprisingly well in the jellyfish gallery.
